Round Two was upon us and the energies were high, with a win already under the belt and a bumper crowd at Brens on a sunny Sunday morning. Joining the Senior Women’s line up was Ebony Underhill, making her UHS debut and Kate “Richo” Richardson.

UHS exploded out of the blocks in the first quarter, with the rucks, Camille Devereux and Megan Pollock, working with the midfielders superbly to clear the ball at every contest. Down the line, the forwards were hungry for goals, with Madeline Hince, Angelica Vaira, Katie O’Reilly and Abbey Mills kicking truly, creating a lead of 6.2-38 to 0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the opposition attempt to claw back the gap, but with limited success, as the backline, commanded by Greta Hankinson and Megan Clerkin, and showcasing debutante Ebony Underhill, shut down any opportunity.
Further up the field, Richo was proving to be unstoppable on the wing, intercepting any ball headed for the danger zone. Rebounding these balls into the forward line, UHS were able to capitalise and score another four goals. Heading into the rooms at half time for a well deserved break, UHS were ahead by 8 goals.

Charging out for the third quarter, UHS did not let up in their efforts to extend the lead even further. Ella Keogh showed her versatility, dictating play as she took up the role of a fierce half back. A couple of momentous snags from Anastasia Gilchrist and Greta Hankinson, both kicking their first goals for the club, headlined the 3rd term.

UHS continued to display their dominance in the last quarter, with midfielders Isabella Conheady and Eliza Terrey putting the pressure on the opposition with their strong tackling ability. Scoring another goal, UHS finished the game with a well rounded 78 point win.

A special congratulations is in order with a massive milestone achieved over the weekend. With her bag of 7 on Sunday superstar Madeline Hince kicked her 100th goal for UHS, an outstanding effort leading the way for both UHS and the VAFA in front of the big sticks.

Men’s Seniors

UHS-VU 4.7.31 – Hampton Rovers 30.16.196

Goal Kickers: Noah Siederman, Ayui Makieng, Tom Rocke, Kane Moroney

Round 2 turned into another learning session for the Vultures. It was the first time the club has played a home C grade game in 40 years. In what was a day of very few highlights, it was a good opportunity to see our future stars get a crack at the senior level with Fraser Campbell and Ayui Makieng got their first caps for the Vultures.

The Rovers where on from the first bounce and they quickly pilled on 53 points to 1 in the first quarter. The defence held on as much as they could with help from Fraser Allen getting down in front of their forwards with some big intercept marks.

The second quarter was much the same with the Rovers piling on another 61 points to 3 to lead into the main break. Half time was a chance to reset and reflect on what we could do to stem the flood of goals as they had blown the lead out 17.12-114 to 0.4-4.

The third quarter brought a new energy as the vultures turned the game to a scrap. Young Noah Seiderman showed his dash to burn 2 rovers and get UHS on the board. This was quickly followed up by the excitement machine Ayui who booted his first senior goal as the young stars showed their worth.

In the final quarter the scrapping energy continued where the vultures managed to maintain the ball and pick their targets. The ultimate Swiss Army Knife Gerard Hawkins was moved down back and first year player Kane Moroney went forward and kicked his first goal. Fellow backman Tom Rocke got on the end of the other with a long bomb from outside 50.

The standard has certainly raised from the previous years in the divisions as the premier grade football has seen a huge jump in ability. Final score 30.16-196 to 4.7-31. UHS-VU will look to keep their second half scrap as a baseline for the season.

Men’s Reserves

UHS-VU 0.7.7 – Hampton Rovers 11.11.77

The reserves match started hot with Hampton continuously thumping the ball into their forward line. Desp ite this our defense held strong with some great spoils by Matt Mallia, Jack Walter really restricting the opposition forwards. This stout defense was then turned into some great attacking link up through Lindsay Murphett and Charlie Johnstone on repeated forward entries on the far side of our esteemed oval. Quarter time scores had us only down by 9, a great effort considering how much of the play was in the opposition half.

The 2nd quarter was another tightly contested one with many repeated stoppages on the clubroom side. Harry “7 foot fourteen” Hilliar was a huge presence in these and along with Rhys Korp created much anger from opposition supporters and players. Hamilton’s inacuraccy however kept us well in the game despite not yet scoring a goal.

The third quarter started with a quick Hampton start with 3 early goals allowing them to skip off to a large lead. Some strong contests from Thomas Cheyne – who’d made the near wing his own – and a shirtless Andy Fortune showed the opposition that we weren’t laying down without a fight.

The last quarter gave us the most open play for the entire day with UHS getting multiple counter-attacks. Sadly we couldn’t generate any goals from these movements with the ball bouncing away or going through the points on multiple occasions.
Big thanks to Maddy Hince and Ella Keogh for umpiring the game and for all the people who came out to support us. It was frustrating not being able to put a goal on the board but we hope to work on our accuracy and improve this next week.
