A couple of professional performances saw UHS notch 2 wins over the weekend. Take a look at our player match reports here!

Women’s Seniors

UHS-W 10.2.62 – Ivanhoe 4.8.32

Goal Kickers: Madeline Hince 6, Angelica Vaira 2, Abbey Mills, Marlo Zambelli

Q1:

The first quarter was a tough fight with two quick goals from Maddy Hince returned each time by Ivanhoe to bring the game to a draw at quarter time with two goals and one behind a piece.

Q2:

UHS accelerated in the second quarter with Maddy Stafford on debut rucking strongly out of the middle and a few sneaky soccer goals from Gel, Maddy and Marlo (FIRST GOAL!!). Ivanhoe retaliated with one minor score but were unable to keep up, with UHS finding themselves ahead by five goals at half time.

Q3:

Ivanhoe came out swinging after half time but the UHS defence of Issey, Meg, Ebony and Eliza kept them to one goal and one behind with UHS scoring two goals and one behind to extend the lead by another goal coming into three quarter time.

Q4:

After working hard all day, the Katies (Webb & O’Reilly) and Abbey dug deep and pushed the ball down to the Elliot Avenue end for a final goal of the game. The Ivies had not given up, with 5 shots on goal in the last, luckily our defenders worked hard and kept them to only one goal and four behinds.

Standout performances included Ebony in the backline with a lot of run & carry, Annie and Bella in the forward pocket bravely taking on opposition players twice their size and Maddy Stafford on debut in the ruck! Maddy Hince with 6 goals was also in her usual superstar form!

Great work to everyone & looking forward to a challenge against Aquinas next week!

Men’s Seniors

UHS-VU 5.9.39 – Old Mentonians 11.17.83

Goal Kickers: Patrick Brookes 2, James Gilfillan, Todd Cracknell, Clay Lund

Making the long trek out to Keysborough, and inspired by exciting senior debuts for Harry ‘Big H’ Hillier and Nik Sirko, as well as the reserves first win of the year, UHS were in high spirits and keen to get their season back on track. After enduring a seemingly never-ending pre game spectacle and a smattering of football/army analogies, it was finally time for the boys to ‘go into war’.

A slow start to the season left the team looking for a spark early and it was the captain, Ezza Ramsay, who stepped up. Fresh in for his first game of the year, Ezza lined up a come-from-behind tackle with the force of a hurtling bus, inspiring the team and leaving the opposition player counting his ribs in a crumpled heap. It was a see-sawing contest throughout the first quarter, with UHS right in the game but perhaps not making the most of opportunities. Gerard Hawkins was once again a general across half back, feasting on Old Mentonians forward entries and spring boarding UHS counter attacks. And when debutant Nik Sirko found Clay Lund with a perfectly weighted kick inside 50, who converted truly, there was plenty of buzz within the group going into quarter time.

The second quarter played out in much the same as the first, with both teams having plenty of attacking opportunities. Unfortunately, UHS favourite Clay Lund was involved in a sickening collision late in the term and the game was delayed for quite some time while he received assistance. When play resumed, it took UHS longer to adapt to the new, wetter conditions, which led to 2 late Old Mentonians goals. Going into half time, Noah Seiderman decided enough was enough, as he took it upon himself to take on roughly half the Old Mentonians team, putting in a serious contention for the title of ‘youngest player in VAFA history start a full scale brawl’.

The 2nd half was dampened by further injuries to Taylor Johnstone and Chris Berogna as a bitterly disappointing 3rd quarter left us staring at a 47 point deficit going into the last. Though the game was out of reach, there were plenty of positive moments during the final term, with terrific long goals to Patrick Brookes and Todd Cracknell and some inspired on ball time for Matt Dimattina showing signs of better things for the team on the horizon.

The team will now look to next week at home against Old Geelong as they chase that elusive first win of the season. We wish Clay, Chris and Taylor the best for their recoveries. Go Vultures!

Men’s Reserves

UHS-VU 8.15.63 – Old Mentonians 4.7.31

Goal Kickers: Fraser Campbell 4, Tommy Woodlock 2, Darcy Meehan, Patrick Wernert

With a lot of debutants in UHS Reserves, it was nothing short of a star-studded lineup on Saturday.

The midfield decided to put on a highlight reel, with Will Thompson, Jacob Best and Charlie Johnstone dancing around opponents.

The defense gave the opposition nothing with Matty Malia providing a golden fist when it was needed on multiple occasions, and Ethan Clarke providing his calm, calculated decision making when it counted.

Up forward Fraser Campbell, aka Chunky, gave the opposition headaches all day and bagged 4 goals for himself. Paddy Luckins worked hard providing an option and taking some nice grabs.

The big man Tommy Woodlock threw his weight around and let his presence known, as well has having a few tussles. However, the big fella got a bit confused and tried running through the goal post and it was clear he’d met his match.

Overall the reserves played as a team, and earned a hard fought win. All the boys are in high spirits and look forward to doing it again next week.

Women’s Reserves

UHS-VU  –  Ivanhoe

Goal Kickers: David Fazakerley 4

“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.”
― Phil Jackson

The Zookeepers went out on safari to Ivanhoe this Saturday morning. There were many positives to come out of the game but the men from Brens were not able to bring home the goods.

The day started strong with the inclusion of two first gamers: Gabe and Henry. While Big Faz came out of retirement to bolster the Zookeepers key position stocks. The first quarter was a slow start with Ivanhoe nabbing the first few before a beautifully won clearance led to Faz taking a lovely mark on the lead to clunk his first for the day.

During the second quarter the Zookeepers managed to get it to under 3 goals with The Faz causing chaos up front. Excitement permeated through the crowd when Gabe Addley moved into the forwardline for a quick rest. He didn’t disappoint kicking true 0.0.

The third quarter saw Mawds, Riley and Raj continue to toil away winning the hard ball while first gamer Henry and his counterpart Roy provided lots of flare and run, but if you’re reading this BP not SOOO much flare and run that they should be called up to the 2s.

By the fourth quarter Ivanhoe’s youth and seemingly 8 person bench allowed them to run over the depleted Zookeepers but the boys left the game with lots of positives and with the return of some key injured players on the horizon, they know a win is around the corner.
