Seniors Match Review
An important match was played against the second team on the ladder (not anymore 😏), Mazenod at Central Reserve. We definitely did not travel all the way there not to win! We were off to a great start in the first quarter keeping them off the score board 0-7.
The second quarter however, we let them catch up which gave us a lot of thinking to do at half time.
At 3 quarter time it was still looking to be a nail biter, however with some change ups in the final quarter we started to lift our game. We scored 2 key final goals, securing us the game and leading us to another victory! Great effort by the whole team. Not one player didn’t give it a red hot crack.
Special mentions to Gretta for that spectacular goal, Abbey, Katie O, Marlo, Laura, and Richo (damn that girl sprints so efficiently to the interchange).
Men’s Seniors
UHS-VU 10.8.68 – Old Ivanhoe 12.17.89
Goal Kickers: Fraser Campbell 2, Todd Cracknell 2, Myles Legudi 2, Thomas Rocke, Fraser Allen, Matthew DiMattina, James Gilfillan

An appetite for growth and a lift in effort were the focuses for the day as the senior men’s side welcomed Old Ivanhoe to a chilly Brens Oval. With the two women’s teams playing on Sunday, a bumper crowd watched on hoping for some signs of improvement on the previous rounds results.
The first quarter began with some positive signs as UHS turned it into a bit of an arm wrestle, tackling with tenacity and challenging every kick. With Ivanhoe then putting back-to-back goals on the board it looked as though things might start to get difficult. A settler from The Todd got us foothold into the game and the continued pressure stemmed the flow of the opposition leaving UHS 9 points down at quarter time.
The second quarter saw some momentum swing the vulture’s way and for the first time this year the footy was played on our terms. Fraser Campbell loaded up from 55 and slotted our first of the term, making it look effortless. Gilfillan, Legudi and the youngest but biggest Dimattina then put through 3 in a row to give Uni a 5 point lead before 2 late goals in reply had Old Ivanhoe leading by just 6 points heading into the main break.
With the green and tan full of belief heading into the second half, keeping up the intensity and effort was going to be the key. Ezza led the way as always on this front, tackling, bumping and causing chaos at every stoppage. Ivanhoe however managed to kick 5 goals to 2 in the third giving them a handy 22 point lead at 3 quarter time. Had it not been for the athleticism and strong hands from Ayui, flying at anything that came in his vicinity, the damage could have been worse.
Ivanhoe managed to slot through 3 quick goals at the start of the last and the game looked to be out of reach. The Uni boys weren’t prepared to roll over though and goals to Fraser Allen, Tom Rocke and a second for Myles ensured that Vultures gave the raucous crowd something to cheer about.
To an outsider a 21 point defeat might not seem like something to be pleased with, however this was a game that should fill the side with confidence. It showed that when bringing the right level of effort and intensity, we belong in Prem C. With plenty of positives to take away, particularly the performances from the young blokes in the side, we will be hoping to register our first win of the season this week against old rivals Preston.
Women’s Reserves
UHS-W 0.1.1 – Mazenod 4.14.38

UHS-VU vs Mazenod
UHS-VU went into the game, looking to win after a close game and loss against Richmond Central last week.
Both UHS-VU and Mazenod started out strong in the first quarter. However, Mazenod had an impressive forward line with Cassandra Stephenson scoring a goal in the first quarter. UHS-VU’s defenders were put to the test by Mazenod but showed strength and determination throughout the game. Stand outs in the UHS-VU defence line were Jessica Agresta, Cassandra Grapsas, Rachael Anderson and Tara Corcoran.
Mazenod continued to dominate in the first half of the game with Jessica Skryniarz scoring a goal in the second quarter, bringing the score at halftime to Mazenod 2.5-17 UHS-VU 0.0.
UHS-VU’s defence line continued their hard work in the third quarter with amazing support from centre player, Isabella Lynch, and in the wing, Kathleen Murdoch. Mazenod did have a few shots on goal but were only able to earn 4 points in the third quarter. UHS-VU remained scoreless at the end of the third quarter despite formidable efforts by the forward line to break through Mazenod’s defence.
UHS-VU’s perseverance continued in the final quarter. However, the excellence shown by Mazenod’s forward line continued with a further two goals scored by Narelle Davis and Peta Bassan. The final score was Mazenod 4.14-38 UHS-VU 0.1-1.
UHS-VU play St Bedes/Mentone Tigers on their home ground next Saturday in what is sure to be an exciting and definitive game for both teams whilst Mazenod will host Ivanhoe, which is predicted to be a closely matched game.
Men’s Reserves
UHS-VU 2.5.17 – Old Ivanhoe 22.14.146

After clapping off local legend, and VAFA’s greatest tuckshop worker St John from his 100th game. The Reserves were keen to make a good start against Ivanhoe… a credible foe….
It was a tough day for the Reserves who battled on for the full 4 quarters against strong opposition.
Notable efforts were Henry and Darcy with their work in the backline; the midfield contingent were competitive all day and matched the Ivanhoe mids with consistent efforts from Rathjen, Best and Lowe. Russel warmed into the game nicely while Hillier dominated in the ruck until injury ruled him out for the reminder of the match. Stackpole gained votes from a strong, contested performance before a dangerous tackle ruled him out with concussion in the 3rd.
The team was competitive around the ground but missed key moments which eventually lapsed into an easy win for Ivanhoe, however, the signs in being able to compete with this kind of calibre is evident in many of the new blood that has recently arrived down to UHSVU.

UHS-VU v St Mary’s
Round 6 – Saturday 15th May
Brens Oval
Mawds Musings on the 3s
Mixed weather day, with cold patches and showers and sun patches. Made it slippery contest. Jack Saill warmed up in a blue hoodie and Fatty in a beanie and double jumper which both of them would have continued to wear if allowed. Pre game Ant was shuffling the magnets hoping we had a bench to count on.
But the tension and the excitement in the air pregame was all due to one man – Sinny! The great goal sneak of the UHS – VU’s 2s and 3s men’s side of 21st century was playing 100 games. Well done Sinny a great achievement, and its been a highlight to play with you and seeing get on the end of plenty of snags along the way. With a customary Sinny and Ant Rev up we got to run through a apt Sinny banner “Always on the Green (and Tan)”.
Inspired and ready to go and hoping to taking up to St Mary’s and hopefully get Sinny to hit the scoreboard we were able to keep in touch by half time only 5 goals down. We played the classics played over the break …” we are still in this” … “first contest” … “lets get the first one” … “do we want it more?” but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. After half-time we just weren’t able to match it even though we battled hard and cracked in. We were a bit off the pace in our connections. All in all a good effort against the top side but we have some work to do to get our next win.
Some other memorable moments
• Oscar finding his position in the ruck, competed well and won some good taps
• Otto – 1st game, whole game in the middle, well done, showed how to crack in
• Ant “Cripps” – in the guts
• Fatty – lasting 5 mins but still getting a shot on goal (still got it)
• Back 6 – just held up under so much pressure, led well by St Clair and Perica
• Mountjoy locks flowing as he dashed off the half back
• Mullet-less J Saill hangtime right in front of the crowd
• Boothy suggesting he could have been dominating if he just clunked a few
• Sauce and Boothy goals!
Fun times! Bring on South Melbourne!
